Environmental Benefits

Biodiesel is a cost effective alternative to conventional petroleum-based diesel, and also enjoys additional environmental and performance benefits.

Lower Emission of Exhaust Smoke. Biodiesel is a clean burning fuel and provides a number of benefits in terms of emissions and environmental effect when compared to conventional petroleum-based diesel, including:

  • close-to-zero sulphur content •
  • significantly lower exhaust particulates and hydrocarbons
  • significantly lower lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions
  • non-toxic

According to research conducted by the National Biodiesel Board of the United States, biodiesel compares favorably with petroleum-based diesel in terms of emissions. The charts below show the emission reduction levels of biodiesel and a 20% biodiesel - 80% petroleum-based dieselblend compared to conventional petroleum-based diesel.

Higher Biodegradability. Biodiesel degrades about four times faster than petroleum-based diesel.Dextrose, a test sugar used as the positive control when testing biodegradability, degrades at the same rate as biodiesel. Blending biodiesel with petroleum-based diesel fuel accelerates the latter’s biodegradability.
